The objective of the establishment of this unit is to create a climate supportive of the rights of the student based on a legal basis within the university, in an attempt to eliminate the wrong perception that considers the student as a shell of obligations and duties, without having the rights that ensure him a stable and successful university life. To protect the rights of the student requires the establishment of a viable, impartial and independent party to consider his grievances. Such a party is usually provided by various university environments regardless of their systems. We believe of the importance of upholding the value of the rights of our students, because of the impact on the development of a culture of equity and justice, helping in the formation of sound academic environment in which rights are preserved taking into account the values and ethics, which will benefit society as a whole. The foundations of the project are:
-
Prepare a document called the (Student Rights Bill) which includes an integrated system of rights and duties that must be signed by the student upon enrolment in the university. The purpose of signing this document is not only to make the student abide by its contents but also to make the student aware of its existence in advance before venturing into his studies in order to assert his rights in the event of an injustice. The current students at the university will be given the opportunity to sign the document and keep a copy stored in their files.
-
The complaint should be considered in two phases: the first start by sub-committees for the protection of rights established in various university colleges. These sub-committees will look into students' complaints while the students are following their studies at the university. The students can raise their grievances in a second phase to the central unit.
-
Taking into account the primacy of the legal component to form a central unit for the protection of student rights.
-
Student participation through the inclusion of a students' representative as a member of the committees for the protection of students' rights in different colleges.
The Committee for the protection of students' rights in the college will consider the written complaints and grievances of the student according to the following:
-
Student complaints concerning material errors in grading of final exams, without the right to object to the authority of the faculty member who made the grading.
-
Student complaints concerning arbitrary and ill-treatment of students by faculty members.
-
Complaints relating to deprive the student of services provided for similar university students.
